Abstract

This paper examines Augustus’ victory city near Actium as a case study of the effects of Augustan city foundations on the memory and commemoration of the cities, spaces and populations they supplanted or joined. Established on Augustus’ campsite, Actian Nikopolis was populated through an enforced synoecism of neighboring settlements. Centuries of tradition and history were thus displaced and repurposed to integrate Nikopolis and its surroundings into an Augustan vision of the Roman Empire. The city thus provides a unique glimpse into how memory, physical spaces and ancient traditions can be constructed, reimagined and occasionally combined to create a new sense of collective memory. However, such developments can also lead to the fading or even complete disappearance of certain memories, evident in the context of those who were displaced to populate this city.
