Abstract

The Arta polyandrion is an early (sixth century) example of a single monument in which memory, space and performance are configured in the service of the emerging community. Located at the intersection of the city of the living and the city’s principal necropolis, the polyandrion binds the two sectors together. Reading the epigram honors the dead and reperforms the original, ephemeral moment of commemoration. Drawing on aristocratic conventions of worth and recognition, the Ambrakia epigram illustrates the dawning of a communal practice in which service to the state, the patris, on behalf of the citizens, the politai, reworks aristocratic conventions. The three lines and ten verses of the epigram encapsulate the Archaic period and the enactment of a new communal civic ideology focused on the commemoration of the dead by the entire community.
