Abstract

Audiences participating in Pindaric performances are invited to make mnemonic efforts to interact with poetic imagery. Moreover, in Pindaric poetry, things, images, and places mobilize audiences as engaged listeners and active viewers. In this paper, I focus on two case studies—O.6.1–7 and P.6.1–18—in which Pindar borrows images from the realm of architecture for poetic purposes. A deeper understanding of these landscapes requires new ways of thinking about how the poet and his contemporaries memorize and recall architectural works with their own (mental more than physical) eyes. To better understand the strategies for creating such “memoryscapes”, I turn to the concept of aspectivity and the overlap of different buildings in an inter-visual approach. I aim to shed new light on the way in which Pindar creates memoryscapes by conflating characteristics drawn from different sources, synoptically and inter-visually.
