Abstract

This article examines the methodology in memory studies, especially concerning the assignment of commemorative meaning to archaeological remains, by exploring the role of the Acropolis of Athens in shaping collective memory of the Persian Wars through material culture. The article proposes three methodological points for analyzing commemorative meaning in archaeological remains: explicitly stating the extent of evidence supporting commemorative claims, exploring alternative explanations for an object’s origin and appearance, and recognizing the possibility of multiple interpretations, including across time. The paper subsequently applies these points to two case studies: the Odeion of Pericles and the architectural blocks built into the north wall of the Acropolis. While these structures are often assigned commemorative value of the Persian Wars, the article argues for a cautious approach in interpreting their commemorative value. This discussion aims to stimulate further debate on the application of memory studies in ancient contexts.
