Abstract

This chapter tracks the history of Roman women during civil war as it is related by contemporary and later authors. It also assesses the consequences of women’s resistance in the years that followed. A rhetorical trope developed whereby gender-based accusations of immoral behavior were promoted as a cause of social and political breakdown. In addition to any resistance they themselves mounted against such messages, these women found a champion in Livy, who, well aware of their actions during the Triumviral decade, highlighted the tradition of women as saviors of the city in times of crisis. He used a moment in history when an otherwise unremarkable wartime measure limiting the traditional feminine display of status was repealed to stage a fictional debate between the consul Cato (read Augustus and his allies) representing those who wished to curtail the roles of women in public, and the tribune Lucius Valerius, who celebrated women as saviors, as worthy members of the citizen body, and as citizens who had the right to guard their own interests. These women won their battles against the Triumvirs, but they lost the war. As the principate became more established, they, like their male peers, fell afoul of its increasingly authoritarian power.
