Abstract

This chapter categorizes the main objections to women in war in Greek historiography. In general, the objections to women and war in classical and post-classical Greek historiography can be divided in two major categories: (1) ideological reasons (in the sense of certain male views of the (alleged) nature of women, their place in society and social roles, and a construction of gender identity) and (2) practical reasons. While the focus is on Greek historiography, in particular of classical times, there will also be some references to post-classical works and genres other than historiography in order to complete the emerging picture.
