Drawing on materials from barrow necropolises, this chapter analyzes the material evidence for female warriors of the Scythians-Scolotes and their neighbors in the northern Black Sea region from the fifth to the third century BCE. It shows that the fourth and early third centuries BCE, while being a period of political disintegration of Scythia and gradual loss of Scythian influence, were also the period of the closest connections between the Scythians and the neighboring Greek apoikai, the flowering of trade, the appearance of the first Scythian cities in the lower reaches of the Dnjepr and Don rivers, and Greco-Scythian art. Against this background, the chapter explores the historical background of the image of Scythian warrior women.
