Abstract

The Cathedral of Toledo is well known for its myriad artworks of varied provenances and types, among them a rich collection of historical textiles from a range of different workshops and geographical origins. This study examines a selection of those textiles from the perspective of their context, based on new data from the interdisciplinary Treasury Project carried out in recent years. The main research questions here addressed concern provenance, place of production, and object biography or itinerary, both in the medieval context and beyond, as well as a comparison of these Toledo holdings with other textiles in Spanish museums and collections. The textiles selected, including ecclesiastical vestments, funerary furnishings, and Islamic banners, have different provenances and functionalities, showing how such luxury items were treated within the ecclesiastical context. Through the characterization and contextualization of different textile types, the present investigation offers new insights into this understudied collection.
