Abstract

The article reports the responses of 1088 students from 11 randomly selected Independent schools in Victoria, Australia. The Mathematics and Technology Attitudes Scale (MTAS) scale for secondary students was used to monitor five affective variables relevant to learning mathematics with technology: Attitudes to learning mathematics with CAS mathematics confidence, confidence with technology, behavioural and affective engagement in mathematics learning. The supplementary variables were the following: CAS experience, gender, achievement, year level and learning setting. Principal Components Analysis (PCA), correspondence analysis, cluster analysis, t-tests ANOVAs with post hoc analyses and box plots have been used for the analysis of studentsâ responses. Statistically significant differences were found between The findings reveal that there is a complex and interconnected nexus of relationships between secondary mathematics studentsâ mathematics confidence, confidence with technology, attitude to learning mathematics with CAS, affective engagement and behavioural engagement, achievement, CAS experience, gender, year level and learning setting. Statistically significant differences were found between a number of the variables and overall students demonstrated higher levels of Technology Confidence compared to their attitudes to learning mathematics with CAS, irrespective of the years of CAS experience, except for girls with three years of CAS experience. The cluster analysis resulted in four types of students.
