Abstract

Whilst there seems to be consensus on the glottonyms of the other five Modern South Arabian languages (MSAL) spoken in Oman and Yemen, the naming of Jibbali/Åá¸¥ÉrÉÌt appears to have been fluctuating between various labels since it first was reported in the western literature up until the present times. Language-naming practices can reveal community attitudes and linguistic perceptions, especially in the case of minority languages. There are no studies dealing with the interrelation between sociolinguistic, etymological and historical factors related to the use of such names. The goal of the present paper is, on the one hand, to present the results of a survey aimed at eliciting the glottonyms employed by the speakers for the language in question. The study was initially carried out jointly by the authors in 2017 in the course of the linguistic fieldwork entailed by their respective doctoral dissertations and then continued individually in the following years. On the other hand, this paper will attempt to interpret a number of insights, gleaned both from direct observation on the part of the authors and historical sources, on the intricate relationship between the historical roots of the language, its glottonyms and the tribal identity of its speakers. After examining this problem from several angles, the conclusion paragraph will recapitulate and argue that the manifold glottonyms of this language are not only the result of tribal diversity, but also of historical events and migrations which shaped the ethnic profile of the people in the area.
