Abstract

This paper presents a piece of poetry that was composed in pre-modern times by the members of the Jibbali/Shehret-speaking community living on the island of al-á¸¤allÄnÄ«ya, Kuria Muria archipelago, Oman. The genre to which it belongs is commonly referred to as nana, which can be performed either by singing (as is the case with the piece analysed) or reciting. The lyrics of this poem are presented and analysed linguistically (i.e. phonetically, phonologically, morphologically, syntactically and etymologically). Additionally, the authors offer a brief commentary on the musical aspect of the poem. The conclusions summarise the results of this analysis and draw some comparisons with other relevant genres.
