Abstract

The Soqotri language (the Modern South Arabian branch of Semitic) displays an unusually complex system of pronominal possession marking. The default marker is di- attached to independent pronouns. A combination of the ablative preposition men with pronominal suffixes is used the contexts of partâwhole possession (and related), where a complementary distribution with the di-marking is observed: the men-marking is restricted to the contexts in which the referent of the possessive pronoun is of low accessibilityâthat is, not coreferent with the subject of the clause or with any other of its constituents. Finally, pronominal suffixes attached directly to the nominal base are used with a limited group of nouns, mostly kinship terms. The material evidence for the present study has been collected from the third (forthcoming) volume of the Corpus of Soqotri Oral Literature (CSOLÂ III). Usually confirming our previous results, these data provide valuable additions to the material analyzed in our earlier studies on the subject.
