Despite numerous studies from a cross-Semitic perspective, root incompatibilities and root structure of the Modern South Arabian languages (MSAL) in particular have not been examined yet. This contribution is a first step in closing this gap, by providing an account of root incompatibilities and root structure in Mehri. In section 2), a tabular overview of attested roots in Mehri (on the basis of Johnstone 1987) will be given, followed up by a discussion of restrictions on identical and homorganic consonants, as well as particularities of biliteral and quadriliteral roots. It is thus hoped, that this contribution will prove useful, both for the study of the MSAL (Mehri in particular), and for comparative Semitic lexical and phonological studies in general.
