Abstract

After a brief look at the situation of refugees from Nazi Austria and Germany declared ‘enemy aliens’ at the start of the Second World War and a brief review of legislation underpinning internment, this paper outlines government internment measures as well as reactions and release plans. Alongside this, it describes administrative issues, persistent concerns regarding fifth columnists, and will show that there was no real intention to release internees quickly. Examples of refugees who applied for release from internment on the strength of being able to help the war effort with specific inventions in various fields are presented and discussed.
