The purpose of this article is to investigate the epistemological potential of “green” in the works of Jamaica Kincaid with special focus on My Garden (book): (1999). “Green,” a deceptively generic, neutral color reads first as a condensed metonym for the author’s native island. I examine its dynamic and symbolic force (as color, figuration, organic space, and concept) to show the ways in which it frames and maps out unexpected zones of encounter with literature, landscape painting, science, and history, and how it speaks to the diasporic writer’s complex process of taking place and establishing her own writing milieu among so many “established narratives.”
