Late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century texts about natural history, the sciences, and natural philosophy ask with increasing urgency what âlifeâ is. Among the many forms of life these texts engage with, vegetal life is often presented as a special. This article traces a prominent concept of the German-language debates around 1800 that describes plant life as developing in a linear fashion from the material to the spiritual. Turning to Goethe as a central example, the article shows how this concept of plant life is realized in both botanical and poetic texts as a vegetal poetics.
