Landscapes and cityscapes of the Anthropocene, heavily managed by humans and then abandoned, produce degraded habitats for plants and animals that will form novel, hybrid ecosystems. Such spaces of a âthird natureâ have attracted the attention of Marion Poschmann and Esther Kinsky, two prominent authors of the ânew German nature writing.â While Kinsky tries to translate the semiotic messages of plants living in these ecosystems, Poschmann has her literary characters explore ferality and pursue spiritual connections with plants, especially trees. Both authors engage the perceived agency of plants to stimulate their creativity for their phytographia, as they articulate the biosemiosis of hybrid ecologies and develop their third nature poetics.
