Plants played a significant role in the technological development of time-lapse photography and magnification in early German film. As a result, the relatively slow growth-processes of plants could be perceived as goal-directed movements. This article highlights the impact of this evolving understanding of plant agency on Alfred DÃ¶blinâs poetics of the modern novel and his efforts to establish a distinctive âcinematic style.â By focusing on enumerations and close-up descriptions in the novella Murder of a Buttercup (1913) and the novel Mountains Oceans Giants (1924), I argue that DÃ¶blinâs prose sets supposedly stationary plants in motion through a fragmented syntax and a multitude of verbs. At the same time, the non-narrative structure of both texts challenges anthropocentric notions of linear time.
