Abstract

In 2020, a massive wave of protests against the Constitutional Tribunalâs ruling on abortion swept through Poland. They took on an unprecedented form and scale, partly due to the involvement of unusual means of aesthetic expression. Based on quantitative and qualitative methods, this article aims to answer two research questions: What is the level of populist attitudes? And what are the aesthetics of everyday life of those participating in the Womenâs Strike? Data collected via survey include the sociological and demographic description of the respondents; their civic activity; the level of self-identification of the respondents on the Left-Right scale; examination of political attitudes; and their populist beliefs. To further assess the aesthetic views of the protesters, a unique âEveryday Life Aesthetics Questionnaireâ was developed. To deepen the understanding of this dimension, 5 semi-structured interviews were conducted after gathering the initial survey results. The implications of the work may prove crucial for outlining a psychological model of populism, deepening our knowledge of what kind of participants occur in contemporary political struggles, and assessing the role of aesthetic expression in mobilizing popular support and shaping political attitudes.
