Abstract

In the paper I analyze the Womenâs Strikes initiated in 2020 in Poland in reaction to a ruling of the Constitutional Tribunal that banned abortion due to fetal impairment as a left-populist mobilization. The analysis is focused on unprecedentedly strong aesthetics that emerged during the strikes. Drawing on Chantal Mouffeâs theory, I argue that this is exactly the aesthetics that facilitates creating equivalence among multiple democratic demands, articulation of the common will and emergence of the pluralist âwe.â I also investigate how it has influenced the artworld and examine practices of musealization of the strikes. Arguing that they share features of left populism, I attempt to answer the question whether art institutions can become a platform to enhance demands of the striking âpeople,â re-present values they performatively establish and foster affects able to fight the current hegemony.
