Abstract

The perception of teachers in Polish society is not clear-cut; on the one hand, in the hierarchy of professions, teachers seem to still occupy a relatively high position and enjoy relatively high public trust, on the other hand, it is a low-paid profession, and teachers themselves experience a differentiation or gradual reduction in its prestige. During the 2019 Polish teachersâ strike, the pro-government media noticeably exploited these tendencies, dismissing the actions of teachers, manipulating the image of the strike and the protesters in order to lower the rank of the profession and the importance of the protest, and to perpetuate distrust towards the intellectual elite. The widely read right-wing political-social weekly Sieci also participated in responding to the strike in such a way. The conducted research on the manner of presenting the Polish teachersâ strike in April 2019 in Sieci was carried out adopting the perspective of the aesthetics of populism. Based on the results, it was possible to determine what image of a teacher the authors publishing their articles in the magazine created and how they tried to influence the attitude of Polish society towards the event. The research focused on stylistic devices that build a negative image of the protesters and thus serve the political interests of the ruling party, i.e. Law and Justice (Prawo i SprawiedliwoÅÄ, PiS), while being an expression of populist aesthetics.
