Abstract

With the dissolution of the USSR and the political transformation in Eastern Europe, the left-wing ideological component in this region was significantly reduced. At the same time, Western liberalism could not completely replace it, especially in times of economic turbulence and increasing wealth stratification. The rapid deterioration of the living conditions and the political importance of the countries of this region created the need for a new political mythology that could play a comforting and compensatory function, showing Eastern Europe not as impoverished, peripheral, and culturally insignificant but as intriguing, important, and having glorious roots. The above processes unleashed in countries such as Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia, a revitalization of several currents of former Pan-Slavism, mixing them with Volkism, neo-paganism, “Aryan myth,” crypto-archaeology, as well as anti-Western, anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. A new phenomenon, the Turboslavs, grows out of these changed roots. Pop culture, including primarily music groups, novels, films, and series, became key to the spread of this concept of the former Aryan empire and the Hyperborean homeland of Europeans in this region, destroyed jointly by hostile forces of the West and Jews. This text attempts to present the Polish version of Turboslavic historiosophy and its pop-culture representation, as well as to explain the popularity of this phenomenon.
