Abstract

The article is an introduction to empirical research into how groups that lost out on the systemic transformation in Poland in 1989-1993 were represented in Gazeta Wyborcza in the same period. Based on Jacques Rancière’s concept of the “distribution of the sensible,” this issue is interpreted from the perspective of reflection on the origins of populism, with special emphasis on the role esthetics (the question of representation) played in the recent populist revolt in Poland. The article aims at presenting the scope of the analysis, at justifying the focus on Gazeta Wyborcza as the most important media outlet of the time and at exploring the systemic transformation as the context for the entire investigation. It also presents the general results of the inquiry, discussed at length in a separate text (see below in this volume). In conclusion, the author points to the weak presence of the analytical-empathic discourse in the analyzed material, which he defines, referring to the concepts of Jacques Lacan (four discourses) and Max Weber (Verstehende Soziologie), as an attempt to see the truth in the protests and to understand their root causes.
