Abstract

After a general introduction (section 1), brief outlines of the forms, use and functions of the pluperfect in standard Croatian and Serbian are given (section 2). The article then focuses on two subthemes: an overview of the occurrence of the pluperfect in modern standard Croatian and Serbian (section 3), and the occurrence and semantic features of the pluperfect of imperfective verbs (section 4). Both subthemes were investigated on the basis of material from linguistic corpora: ASPAC (Barentsen’s Amsterdam Slavic Parallel Aligned Corpus), the Croatian linguistic corpus “Riznica” of the Institut za hrvatski jezik i jezikoslovlje (Zagreb), the Croatian Web corpus HrWaC, and the Serbian Web corpus SrWaC. Section 5 deals with the form beše, imperfect 3sg of biti ‘to be’, also used as pluperfect auxiliary, which occurs as a degrammaticalized word form as well, and came into use as a discourse particle. Section 6 is about some native speakers’ uncertainty in the formation and use of the pluperfect. The conclusions follow in section 7.
