Abstract

Since its emergence in the 1990s, there has been growing interest among scholars, practitioners, and policymakers regarding restorative justice’s ability to prevent and reduce crime. As a result, many studies have sought to evaluate the effectiveness of restorative justice programmes in preventing and reducing post-intervention offending. This literature can be categorised into two distinct bodies of work: ‘reoffending research’ and ‘desistance research’. Reoffending evaluations aim to assess the efficacy of restorative justice programmes in preventing recidivism compared to other traditional criminal justice responses. Conversely, desistance studies explore offenders’ qualitative narratives to determine whether participating in restorative justice can reduce their trajectories or patterns of offending over time. However, despite co-existing for over twenty years, the distinction between reoffending research and desistance research often remains unclear to many in the criminal justice field. But, among those who do understand this distinction, many conceptualise the two methodologies as competing or opposing paradigms. That is, reoffending research and desistance research have been repeatedly and – and we argue – unfairly pitted against one another as methodological rivals. In this chapter, we first clarify the key differences between reoffending research and desistance research in restorative justice. We then critically examine the core aims, strengths, and weaknesses of the two methodological paradigms. Following this, we argue that reoffending research and desistance research should not be viewed as competing methodologies, but instead complementary. We further contend that a marriage of these two methodologies offers the most effective means of understanding the true crime prevention and reduction potential of restorative justice.
