Abstract

Background

The modern global demand for foods that are safe, fresh, and high in nutritional value has led to the worldwide emergence of technologies in food production, processing, and preservation. Among these irradiation stands out as is a safe, practical, and effective way for improving food safety and quality and extending shelf life. Although the process has been used and researched for decades, the application of food irradiation continues to convey controversy due to its negatively interpreted public perceptions.

Scope and Approach

The regulatory framework around food irradiation is divided between international standards and national regulations, greatly varying between countries concerning lists of authorized foods, dose measurement and allowance, and labelling rules. This article discusses the regulatory framework around food irradiation from a global perspective. It also discusses the consumer acceptance of irradiated foods. Future developments based on science for improving the knowledge and acceptance of irradiated foods among consumers, the food industry, and government bodies, are also analyzed.

Key Findings and Conclusions

As the worldâs population grows, global food chains are becoming more complex leading to heightened food safety risks. Food irradiation has been scientifically proven to be an effective and safe way to eliminate harmful micro-organisms and insects from foods. Irradiation may also increase food longevity and thereby reduce food waste. Informing consumers about the benefits of the treatment could foster greater acceptance of irradiated foods, and the harmonization of national regulations and adoption of the Codex Standard for Irradiated foods would support the broader technology use. Such efforts would facilitate the trade of irradiated products, ultimately increasing the availability of safe and wholesome foods for consumers across the globe.
