Abstract

This chapter examines Brechtâs method of adaptation vis-Ã -vis his adaptation of Platoâs depictions of Socrates at the Battle of Delium. It discusses four primary gestic elements that coalesce around the Fabel of courage: the gestus of working up the courage; the gestus of fear; the gestus of saving face; the gestus of coming clean. It reveals a use of the technique of historicizing, in relation to a critique of war heroism. It discusses three instances of estrangement, altering the mode through which the story is delivered, changing its tone, and temporal transposition. Finally, it reconstructs a Brechtian conception of brave action as the willingness to question exploitative social organizations and then doing something revolutionary about them.
