Abstract

In this chapter, I describe my journey in participating in a Vipassanā retreat at Chom Tong Temple in Chiangmai, Thailand. I met Luang Phu Tong Sirimangalo, and his students learned about the four foundations of mindfulness practice within the Mahasi Sayadaw wisdom tradition. This lineage uses mental noting to acknowledge the physical and mental phenomena to heighten partitioners’ awareness. Engaging with monastics taught me a more accessible kind of happiness that comes from within. After the retreat, I conducted collaborative research with my students, colleagues, and educators from a public university.
