Abstract

Part of an ongoing artistic collaboration and conversation with the poet Stephanos Stephanides, the two-part installation (âCloudâ and âPostcards in Playâ) by Anandana Kapur invites onlookers to meditate on how borders cannot bind either memories or clouds. The âCloudâ piece gives materiality to personal memory by repurposing an old piece of cloth to represent a canvas of possibilities. Hung in a manner that it looks like a view from a window, the clouds become a mnemonic that the artist has borrowed from the poetâs pocket. This embodiment links generations and also shapes recollections of the poetâs words. The section titled âPostcards in Playâ combines the artistâs images of everyday life in India â signs, streets, people, rituals â with the poetsâ musings on Cyprus and his travels to India. Hung in the manner of a whimsical, see-through curtain of strings and taped postcards the piece changes its contours with each gust of wind. The viewers may find themselves reading or examining an image. Sometimes, both actions could be interrupted midway as the strings swing freely in unpredictable clockwise and anticlockwise turns. This serves as a reminder that vantage points to paths of memory are possible through artifacts that map space, time and history as both physical and ephemeral.
