Abstract

The essay examines selected texts by three of the most audible voices in Cypriot writing in English: short stories from Nora Nadjarian’s Ledra Street (2006), Aydin Mehmet Ali’s short story “Women of Nicosia” (2004) and Stephanos Stephanides’s poem “Broken Heart” (1993/2000). Focusing on the capital city of Nicosia, these narratives reveal the complex and multi-layered historical realities of the island, from the legacy of colonialism to the aftermath of the Turkish invasion to the influx of migration and the changed demographics. The three writers thus offer an intervention into Cypriot memory politics while simultaneously providing a perspective on the complex identity politics of the current state of this historically and presently multicultural nation.
