Abstract

This essay features what Pagnoulle calls âan old-school close readingâ of one of Stephanos Stephanidesâs most written about poems, âKarpassiaâ, and a critical reflection on the process of rendering the English original into French. In her discussion, Pagnoulle sheds light on the significance of empathy, a quality she finds and praises not only in the poemâs creator, but most importantly in the very process of translation. The fifteen tercets of this deceptively straightforward poem weave the complexity of our relation to time and place on a territory not always accessible to the people who inhabit it. The fragile beauty of these human encounters, however, is heard in the space of the poem itself. To capture these delicate and fine hues that poetic language creates and accommodates, Pagnoulle claims, translators have to play around with words in their target languages, though such necessary intrusions should be as unobtrusive as they can be.
