Abstract

Inflammation is a defense mechanism employed to create hostile conditions for pathogens and to prevent the spread of tissue infection. The main task of acute inflammation is the elimination of infectious agents, repair of affected or injured tissues with the following re-establishment of the homeostatic state. However, in some cases inflammation resolution is delayed or compromised and inflammation proceeds from the acute phase to chronic inflammation leading to a variety of chronic illnesses. Excessive inflammation and inflammatory diseases are common in dairy production, especially during the transition period. It is proven that optimal Se status is an important regulator of the inflammation. Firstly, in macrophages in vitro, it was shown that Se is anti-inflammatory. Secondly, similar protective action of Se was confirmed in cell culture models. Thirdly, in various mastitis models, mainly with rodents, it was proven that Se supplementation can decrease inflammation. It seems likely that protective effects of Se against inflammation have general biological application, since Se deficiency was shown to induce inflammation in ruminants, rodents, pigs and chickens. Importantly, protective effects of Se against inflammation were observed with various toxicological models with a variety of toxicants, including heavy metals, OTA and many others. Molecular mechanisms of anti-inflammatory actions of Se are not well defined at present. It could well be that by maintaining redox homeostasis optimal Se status plays a regulatory role on many different processes in the body, including maintenance of optimal immune response. Indeed, this subject warrants further investigation.
