Brief abstract

This book explores the transformation of philosophical reason in German Idealism, specifically focusing on comparative and evolutionary studies of the central authors of that period. It presents original interpretations of the development of Fichte, Hegel, and Schellingâs thoughts, comparing and contrasting them also with more recent conceptions of reason.

The book follows the post-Kantian and idealist philosophical systems from Kantâs rehabilitation of dialectics through to Schellingâs philosophy of mythology, highlighting the crucial steps that irreversibly transformed philosophical reason. We examine the role of the principle of sufficient reason in the philosophical development of the period, Kantâs antinomy of reason, and the problem of skepticism in post-Kantian philosophy as foundational concepts for the study of the philosophical transformations of reason in German Idealism.

We present Fichteâs Wissenschaftslehre as an image theory, Hegelâs transformation of metaphysics into logic, Hegelâs philosophy of history, and Schellingâs concept of the irrational ground of consciousness. The concluding chapters show how the dialectical concepts of German Idealism underpin the critical inversion of values and negativity present in some twentieth-century conceptions of reason.
