Abstract

The introductory chapter offers a preliminary overview of the most significant steps in the transformation of reason in German Idealism. Its starting point is a brief discussion of the internal articulation between the transcendental Analytic and Dialectic in Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason. As the philosophers after Kant tried to work out that articulation, the methodological and constitutive use of conceptual contradictions and actual oppositions became one of the most striking developments in philosophical thought. This chapter presents the general meaning and consequences of dialectics, negativity, and conflict in German Idealism, namely for Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre, Hegel’s Logic, and Schelling’s thought after the Investigation into the Essence of Human Freedom. It shows that although these distinct ways of thinking led to different results, they all included a principle of reason’s insufficiency and limitation, which challenged reason and threatened to invert its meaning.
