Abstract

This chapter examines the hypothesis that the concept of âgroundâ (Grund) presented by Schelling in his Investigations into the Essence of Human Freedom of 1809 should be interpreted as a development and the end station of the history of the principle of sufficient reason since Leibniz as studied above. It shows that Schellingâs concept of ground is directed against idealist philosophy, which only discloses the conditions of possibility or the concepts of objects but not their actual reality. This reality, according to Schelling, must be studied, taking the concept of ground into account, which expresses reality as a pre-conceptual, pre-subjective, and pre-conscious will. This conceptionâs epistemological, ethical, and metaphysical consequences are explored and presented mainly in the next chapter.
