Abstract

This chapter proposes a dialectical reading of Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason. It begins by listing some different models Kant employs to define the subject of knowledge. It articulates then these models with the dialectics between the “limits” and the “frontiers” of reason as determined by Kant. That dialectics allows us to understand why human reason has to be divided into the faculties of sensibility, understanding, and reason in the strict sense. Sensibility is explained as an essential limitation of the understanding, while reason represents the totality beyond the bounds imposed on the understanding by sensibility. Such a dialectical reading contributes to clarifying the subsequent development of philosophical logic and epistemology by Fichte and Hegel.
