Abstract

The final chapter addresses the significance of historical thought in German Idealism. This study shows that Hegel opposes both a priori and mere empiricist historiography but considers history as the emergence of the awareness of freedom. However, given the massive presence of evil in history, we must discuss to what extent a rational interpretation of human history is possible. Based on Hegel’s reflections on the struggle for recognition and language, we argue that reason spontaneously promotes the transformation of the negative into the positive. Thus, despite all the distortions of consciousness in history, from which Hegel himself was certainly not exempt, his philosophy of history remains a theoretical basis that, without ignoring the profoundly negative aspects of human history, promotes the possible reconciliation with humanity. In conclusion, as German Idealism demonstrates, only such a reconciliation can reestablish reason beyond its necessary self-critique.
