Abstract

We continue the study of Hegelâs Science of Logic as a transformation of metaphysics and Kantâs transcendental logic. This chapter shows how Hegel understands his dialectical logic as conceptual analysis, critical philosophy, and sharpening of Kantâs transcendental philosophy. Hegel argues that it absorbs the epistemological and ontological functions of both classical metaphysics and Kantâs criticism. Hegelâs logic encompasses transcendental philosophy as it addresses possible experience in the chapter on modal concepts, which contains the distinction between formal possibility, real possibility, and actual existence. On an exclusively logical level, this difference plays the role Kant attributed to the synthesis of understanding with the manifold of sensibility. We conclude that Hegelâs logic sought to systematically unify, in a single discipline, Kantâs transcendental Analytics, Dialectic, and Aesthetics.
