Abstract

This essay analyses strategies developed by Hendrick Goltzius and Karel van Mander to orchestrate viewersâ responses to Goltziusâs deformed right hand. While Goltziusâs works that thematise his âcromme handtâ distil fundamental ideas of the Western psychology of artistic creation and of disability, they are also tied to his experiences of the compound condition of melancholy, whose âovercomingâ drove Goltziusâs potential for virtuosity, invention, and craftsmanship. By demonstrating that Goltzius and Van Mander encouraged viewers to transcend emotions commonly associated with reactions to disability and disease, such as charity and revulsion, the essay clarifies and expands the affective history of early modern disfigurement and impairment.
