Abstract

This paper deals with the poetic processing of opposing, mixed and shifting emotions in 16th century psalm poetry and erotic love elegy. Despite the fundamentally different subject matter, both genres have many overlaps and similar strategies. On the basis of communicative codes and rhetorical-stylistic techniques, the concept of emotion used will be identified. To this end, poems by two well-known poets, George Buchanan and Janus Lernutius, will be examined, both of whom placed importance on demonstrating their literary humanistic skills and had a (different) religious background.

The paper retraces the historical bond of psalm poetry and erotic elegy to the lyric genre, examines their common emotional characteristics in light of genre- specific and methodological considerations and takes into account fundamental socio-psychological and poetological criteria that provide information about the way feelings were dealt with in this literary period.
