Abstract

This contribution will argue that the richness of Egypt’s archaeological, including papyrological, record is uniquely poised to demonstrate the successive stages of death, burial and commemoration for individuals and communities in Late Antiquity. While Egypt was a constituent part of the larger Roman Empire by the 4th c., the body of evidence is rarely exploited by archaeologists of the period. This material can provide rare insight into various identity markers such as status, gender, language, religion and even ‘ethnicity’ (i.e., real or perceived descent). This chapter seeks to introduce the nature and limits of the evidence (i), the history of the subject, in particular its foundation in the discovery of ‘Coptic’ textiles (ii) and the current state of fieldwork at sites in different regions of Egypt (iii). Such a regional survey is a first step toward identifying what is distinctive about Egypt, and what is shared with other parts of the late antique world.
