Abstract

Early Byzantine Sicily shows the full repertoire of Mediterranean mortuary practice for the period: rock-cut and earth-cut graves (formae), stone-built and lidded tombs, arched niches (arcosoli), subterranean catacombs and chambers (ipogei), burial in sarcophagi and in amphorae (enchytrismÃ²s), graves cut from ground level (sub divo), and tombs standing above ground (subdiali). Sicilian archaeologists since Paolo Orsi in the 19th c. have explored and cherished this inheritance, asking questions about the meaning of its diversity, and whether it be regional, temporal, social or religious. This chapter focuses on two recent campaigns of especial interest: first that at Agrigento, of all Byzantine burial-places in Sicily the most comprehensively and scientifically explored; and second the contribution of a European Research Council project Sicily in Transition (SICTRANSIT) which is examining the mortuary practice and biomolecular properties of 253 individuals in 22 cemeteries, 13 of which are mainly Byzantine in date. Burials of both the Early (5th to 8th c.) and Middle (9th to 13th c.) Byzantine periods are discussed.
