Abstract

There has been a rapid expansion of the number of private education providers in several developing countries, whose main goal is profit making. Consequently, education has increasingly become a flourishing and attractive business without adequate regulation by those in authority. Such commercialisation not only runs contrary to international and regional legal frameworks such as the African Children’s Charter but also brings to the fore issues such as discrimination, equal access to quality education, and social justice for children. The present chapter critically examines all these issues in more detail, and how the African Children’s Charter and its implementation mechanisms can mitigate the impact of the commercialisation of education on the right to basic education of children in Africa.
