Abstract

This contribution is dedicated to the current language policies of the Royal Spanish Academy (Real Academia Española) and the Association of Spanish Language Academies regarding Judeo-Spanish. It analyzes the extent to which Judeo-Spanish fits into the framework of this language policy of the academies, which is mainly based on the concepts of polycentricity and pan-Hispanism. It discusses the question as to whether the policy implemented by these institutions takes into account and coincides with the aims of the speakers of Judeo-Spanish in the 21th century, who have had their own debates on standardization and normativization and created independent organs and institutions for the maintenance of their language. Furthermore, it is questioned whether the characteristics of Judeo-Spanish meet the conditions of this policy, and who benefits from this inclusion of Judeo-Spanish into the activities carried out by the academies: the Sephardic community or the Spanish-language institutions.
