Summary

In a first approach, C12:0 and C14:0 were identified with RUSITEC to be the most effective medium-chain fatty acids against ruminai methane production whereas C18:0 remained ineffective. This difference was only partially confirmed when these three fatty acids were supplied to lactating cows, but, for several reasons, intake of C12:0 and C14:0 had been lower than of C18:0. C12:0 and C14:0 improved digestibility and metabolisability of gross energy because of their higher digestibility relative to C18:0. The supplementation of the fatty acids clearly increased their concentration in milk fat but to a different extent.
