Summary

Recovery of 1-¹³C in breath air after an intraperitoneal injection of l-¹³C-labelled leucine was measured in experiments lasting 5.5 h in 6 female mink measured in lactation weeks 1-4. The females were fed diets with high (66.6% of dry matter (DM)), medium (53.7% of DM) or a low (37.8% of DM) protein content. Both protein level (P=0.008) and week of lactation (P<.001) had significant effect on the recovery of label. Recovery decreased with decreasing protein level and with progressing stage of lactation. The recovered label reflected the rate of decarboxylation of the marker, and hence marker irreversibly lost from protein metabolism. Therefore, the results show that protein is an important energy source for the lactating dam when protein supply is high, and that this role decreases with decreasing dietary protein level, and when the demand for protein metabolism increases when milk yield increases during the 3^rd and 4^th weeks of lactation
