Summary

Net energy intake (NEI) data from 31 published experimental trials with lactating dairy cows, non lactating dairy cows, growing bulls and steers fed concentrate restrictively and forage ad libitum were analysed. The NEI value of feeds was estimated by use of the Scandinavian Feed Units system based on Weende analysis and digestibility of organic matter. The NEI values showed a negative linear relationship with the dietary chewing index value (CI) (min/MJ NE): NEI=NEIme – b•CI in each trial (R²=0.995). The intercept value (NEIme) (MJ NE/kg^0.75) when CI equals zero, was 0.87±0.11 in non-lactating cows, 0.83±0.11 in growing cattle and 1.5±0.16 in lactating dairy cows. The slope (b) values were 0.029±0.012 for growing cattle, 0.041±0.012 for non-lactating cows and 0.07±0.018 for lactating cows. The b values were correlated with the NEIme values across forage type, concentrate level and lactating vs. non lactating cattle: b=0.013-0.027•NEIme², R²=0.89, P<0.001. The NEIme values can be interpreted as the metabolic estimated capacity for NEI in case of no physical limitation of intake. The investigation demonstrates the potential for predicting ad libitum NEI from the dietary CI value and NEIme value.
