Summary

Five diets, four of which had 200g/kg of different added fibre sources, were fed to five ostriches weighing on average 10 kg; to five emus at two different live weights (11 and 20 kg) and to five adult cockerels. The fibre sources were, pollard, milled lucerne meal, milled Rhodes grass and milled wheat straw. Birds were housed individually and dry matter digestibility was measured using acid insoluble ash as an inert marker. Apparent metabolisable energy (AME) values were similar for the emus at the two ages. When data for the emus were combined and comparisons made between the three species, AME values for the emus were less (P<0.05) than for cockerels and both were much less than for the ostriches that differed significantly from emus and cockerels. Very high AME values were measured with the ostriches; this was due in part to observed recycling of excreta and therefore concentrating the marker.
