Summary

Views on opportunities and constraints in Animal Science into the next millennium are subjective and individualistic. They are moulded inevitably by current trends in research and projections of the demand for animal products. For example, by 2020 it is estimated that the world demand for meat will increase by more than 60%. Meeting the growing demand for animal products in the increasingly highly competitive free market requires improvements in production efficiency which in turn stimulate new scientific approaches. By concentrating almost exclusively on the recent scientific literature we have attempted to portray the aims for animal production of those involved in the extended range of science disciplines that now contribute to animal science. These aims include improvements in the nutritive value and intake of forage feeds by ruminants, enhanced production and quality of microbial protein, the use of gene markers in the selection for production traits in both plants and animals, and an improved understanding of how dietary nutrients promote the expression of genes for key production traits. They also include new and more efficient procedures for gene transfer that are emanating from recent advances in cloning by nuclear transfer. Many of the new technologies are constrained by their current fragility and the consequent uncertainty regarding their likely technical success. They are also constrained by concerns regarding their ethical acceptability and the possibility that they may result in adverse effects on animal and human health. For these reasons it is important that they feature in the more informed and open debate that is needed to identify their role in plant and animal production.
