Summary

This paper briefly reviews the basic mechanisms of mammalian gene transcription (mRNA synthesis) and translation (protein synthesis). Cellular mechanisms for regulation of transcription and translation in response to endocrine, nutrient and mechanical stimuli as well as to various cellular ‘stresses’ are considered, highlighting possible foci for ‘cross-talk’ between their respective signalling pathways. Control of mRNA stability as a mechanism for modulating gene expression is briefly discussed. The role of nutrients as regulators of gene expression is particularly stressed, as it is increasingly recognised to have fundamental implications for the whole of the biological sciences, notably in medicine and agriculture.
